Our Story: First Impressions of Querétaro
Why Querétaro?
We chose Querétaro as the “soft landing” for our journey after researching and narrowing down a list of potential cities. Ultimately, Querétaro stood out for its location, size, climate, safety, and rich history. Its proximity to Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende, Bernal, and Guanajuato made it the perfect home base for future adventures.
The temperate year-round climate—with cool evenings—was a welcome change from the scorching Texas heat. With a smaller population than Austin, the city felt more manageable and accessible, especially with public transit. Safety was also a deciding factor; Querétaro’s lower crime rates compared to many mid- to large-sized U.S. cities gave us peace of mind. And of course, its colonial architecture, stunning churches, and many museums promised endless opportunities to learn and explore.
Arrival and First Wanderings
One of our very first impressions came on the drive into the city: the massive 18th-century aqueduct rising against the skyline. Once we checked into our Airbnb, fueled by adrenaline and excitement, we wasted no time. We dropped off our bags and immediately set out for the city center.
Our first stop was the Mercado de la Cruz. The market buzzed with life—merchants shouting, music playing, and the parking lot overflowing with vendors. As we walked inside, the air was filled with the aromas of sizzling taco meat, fragrant spices, and fresh produce. We grabbed a fresh juice and wandered through the maze of aisles lined with everything imaginable.
We left both overwhelmed and thrilled, already making plans to return. This was going to be nothing like our trips to H-E-B back in Texas! From there, we drifted through the colorful streets, listening to the chatter of families enjoying their weekend while the cool breeze brushed our skin. We stumbled upon a small plant shop—an oasis brimming with greenery—and instantly made a mental note to come back.
Eventually, the skies opened, and a sudden downpour sent us running for cover. We ducked into a taco stand and enjoyed warm tortas while waiting for the rain to pass. But the storm lingered, and, soaked but happy, we called it a day and made our way back to our Airbnb.
Settling In
Our first week in Querétaro was a mix of practical errands and exploration—stocking up on groceries, picking up a few kitchen items, wandering our new colonia, and reminding ourselves to slow down. After the rush of our move, we were still going full speed, until our bodies forced us to pause: we both came down with an illness and had no choice but to rest. Thankfully, medical care and medication were readily available, just a short walk from our Airbnb.
By our second week, we began recovering and adjusting. Now, in our third week, we feel deeply grateful for our decision to start our journey here. We’re learning the layout of the city, Jessica is practicing more Spanish, we’ve discovered some amazing places to eat, and we’re slowly creating routines that give our days rhythm and ease.
Looking Ahead
Our first days in Querétaro left us both in awe—and with plenty of adjustments. As we continue to settle in, we’re eager to share more of the beauty this city has to offer, along with the lessons we’re learning along the way.
